NEAT November 1997 Interesting Objects
1997 WB21 = ASNY6E is an Apollo Earth-crossing asteroid discovered with NEAT on 11/26/97. It was moving 1.3 degrees
per day with a magnitude V = 18.7. Remarkably, it was recovered 3 nights later with NEAT. Follow-up observations were
made at Haleakala-NEAT/GEODSS, Sormano, and Dominion Astrophysical Observatory. 1997 WB21 is 170-370 meters in
diameter, with a,e,i,q = 1.44, 0.31, 3, 0.9959 (G. Williams, SAO)
ATPMP3 was linked to a previously discovered object 1997 TR6. It is probably a Mars-approaching asteroid.
1997 WU22 (also revision)= AU5T56 is a large Apollo Earth-crossing asteroid discovered with NEAT on 11/30/97. It was
moving 0.5 degrees/day with a magnitude of V = 18.9. Follow-up observations were made at Sormano and Dominion
Astrophysical Observatory. K. Lawrence found a "pre-discovery" observation from 1990 Palomar observations (PCAS -
Helin et al.) that led to a refinement of its orbit and size. 1997 WU22 is 2-5 kilometers in diameter, with a,e,i,q = 1.47, 0.46,
16, 0.8189 (G. Williams, SAO). Because of its large size and orbit it is classified as a Potentially Dangerous Minor Planet,
although there is no cause for concern now.
Comet 128P/Shoemaker-Holt 1-B = AU5MLV was detected with NEAT on 11/30/97. It has a semi-major axis of a =
4.489686 a.u., eccentricity = 0.321324, and inclination angle = 4.3616.
